Before You Begin (preconception + prenatal)

Healthy pregnancies begin before conception. Start folic acid at least a month before trying — it cuts your baby’s risk of spine and brain defects by up to 70%. Stop smoking and alcohol, and let us check your iron, thyroid, sugar, and blood pressure early — with genetic screening for couples who are blood relatives.

At REEF, we walk you through each step, so you begin this journey feeling prepared and reassured.

Trimester One — The Beginning

Your baby’s major organs form now, so early care matters most. Nausea affects up to 80% of women — usually harmless, though severe vomiting needs help. Your first visit covers a dating scan and routine bloods, with the NT scan at 11–13⁺⁶ weeks to screen for Down syndrome. Keep up folic acid, eat small frequent meals, and get any heavy bleeding or severe pain checked.

At REEF, we keep these crucial early weeks closely monitored, so you feel safe from the very start.

Trimester Two — The Bloom

Comfort returns — nausea settles and your bump begins to show. The key milestone is the anomaly scan (TIFFA) at 18–22 weeks, with a glucose test at 24–28 weeks and blood pressure checks each visit. You’ll feel baby’s first movements around 18–24 weeks — keep up light exercise, iron, calcium, and good hydration.

At REEF, this is when we help you feel confident and connected to your growing baby.

Trimester Three — Almost There

The final stretch, as your baby grows quickly and prepares for birth. Visits become more frequent — fortnightly, then weekly — with regular blood pressure, weight, and growth checks. Track your baby’s movements daily, and start planning your birth, hospital bag, and the signs of labour.

At REEF, we monitor these final weeks closely, so you reach your big day feeling safe and ready.

Welcoming Baby (delivery)

The moment you’ve waited for. At REEF, we support every birth — normal delivery, painless (epidural) labour, and caesarean when needed — guided by what’s safest for you and your baby. Our team and Level III NICU stay ready around the clock, and in the first golden hour we place your baby skin-to-skin with you.

The Fourth Trimester (postnatal recovery)

The first six weeks — the “fourth trimester” — are for healing and bonding. We monitor your recovery, blood pressure, and wound healing, and support breastfeeding (recommended exclusively for 6 months). As postpartum mood changes affect up to 1 in 7 mothers, we check your emotional wellbeing too — with newborn screening, vaccinations, and a 6-week review for you both.

Breastfeeding Made Easier

Breastfeeding is natural, but it doesn’t always come easily. Our lactation consultants guide first-time mums through latching, positioning, and milk supply, with hands-on support whenever you need it. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months — and we’re with you at every feed until you feel confident.

Painless Delivery

Birth is different for everyone, and so is the comfort you’ll need. From breathing techniques, movement, and warm support during early labour to medical options like an epidural for stronger relief, at REEF we help you choose what suits you best — keeping you calm, comfortable, and in control at every stage.

High Risk Pregnancies

Some pregnancies need extra care — high blood pressure, diabetes, twins, or a previous complication. At REEF we monitor these closely with regular scans and specialist support, backed by our Level III NICU and round-the-clock team to keep you and your baby safe.

FAQs

When should I see a doctor after a positive pregnancy test?

When should I see a doctor after a positive pregnancy test?

How many scans are needed during pregnancy?

Usually three key scans – a dating scan, the anomaly scan (18–22 weeks), and a growth scan in the third trimester – with more if your doctor advises closer monitoring.

Is normal delivery possible after a previous C-section?

Often yes. A vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) is safe for many women. We assess your history and guide you on the safest option for you and your baby.

Does an epidural increase the chance of a C-section?

No. An epidural relieves labour pain without raising your chance of a caesarean- it simply keeps you comfortable and in control.
