Fetal medicine
What Is Fetal Medicine
Fetal medicine is the specialised care of your baby’s health and development inside the womb. Using advanced ultrasound and screening, we monitor growth, detect concerns early, and guide high-risk pregnancies — so any issue is anticipated and managed well before delivery.
The NT Scan
Done between 11 and 13⁺⁶ weeks, the nuchal translucency (NT) scan measures the fluid at the back of your baby’s neck and, combined with a blood test, screens for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions early in pregnancy.
The Anomaly Scan
Performed at 18–22 weeks, the anomaly (TIFFA) scan is a detailed check of your baby’s organs, brain, spine, heart, and limbs. It confirms healthy development and detects most major structural concerns at a stage when they can be planned for.
The Growth Scan
Later in pregnancy, growth scans measure your baby’s size, weight, fluid levels, and blood flow (Doppler). They confirm your baby is growing well and lying in the right position — essential for high-risk pregnancies.
Genetic & Diagnostic Tests
When closer evaluation is needed, we offer non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and, where indicated, diagnostic tests like amniocentesis — accurately assessing chromosomal conditions so you can plan ahead with clarity.
High-Risk & Twin Pregnancies
Twins, growth concerns, or maternal conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure need extra vigilance. We monitor these closely with regular scans and specialist input, coordinating with our obstetric and NICU teams for a safe delivery.
Counselling & Continuity of Care
A worrying scan can feel overwhelming — and you won’t face it alone. We explain findings clearly, discuss every option with empathy, and stay with you through delivery and beyond, backed by our Level III NICU.

Why have I been referred for fetal medicine?
Often just for a closer look or routine reassurance -for twins, age, or a previous complication. A referral isn’t always cause for worry.
Do all pregnancies need fetal medicine?
No – many need only routine scans. It’s recommended when extra monitoring adds value.
What if a problem is found?
We explain it gently and plan ahead.
